  • On Tuesday, Dec. 23, Ashley Furniture’s Hope to Dream program surprised 10-year-old Maylee Williams, who is undergoing chemotherapy, by donating a queen mattress, dresser, $500 check, vacation package, and Speedway in Lights tickets through Speedway Children’s Charities. The holiday donation reflects the store’s ongoing commitment to giving back.  WCYB
  • On Tuesday, Ashley Furniture donated sixteen sheet sets through Speedway Children's Charities & the Hope to Dream program to organizations including Sneedville Angels and East Tennessee Christian Home and Academy in Elizabethton to meet ongoing need for essential items.  WCYB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tusculum University announced a new scholarship fund Monday to help first-generation students with military family ties. Named for alumna Col. Jo Anne Kilday ’59, the fund supports veterans + their descendants and honors her service.  WFHG

  • Roan Mountain State Park received the Excellence in Operations Award from TDEC for its effective response to Hurricane Helene, reflecting strong operational coordination in the park. The recognition is based on challenges overcome during the storm.  WFHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Veterans in Greene County are seeking to expand the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery as it stopped accepting new burials six years ago — local officials have unanimously approved a request for Congress to consider the change. The effort aims to give families a nearby resting place.  WCYB
  • Washington County officials stated that BWXT reduced its rezoning request for its Jonesborough plant & planning commissioners will review the proposal Jan. 6, 2026 at the George Jaynes Justice Center.  WCYB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Ballad Health requires staff to wear masks in patient care areas at its facilities and restricts visitors with flu-like symptoms or under 18 to curb rising influenza cases. Staff may make exceptions for patients nearing end-of-life — ensuring family can remain nearby.  WCYB
