COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Chain Free Dogs is offering free fences to those who adopt shelter dogs. The group provided a fence for Rocky (843 days in shelter) and aims to install 25 fences in 2025, with adopters needing to pre-qualify (requirements apply).  WCYB

CULTURE NEWS

  • The ETSU Jazz Ensemble held a fall concert on November 14 at the Martin Center for the Arts under Martin Walters’ direction, playing classic jazz tunes and the first performance of 'Groundhog Day' by alumnus Brandon Kaldy+ the event underscored the group's growing role in both jazz and commercial music.  The East Tennessean
  • Bud Frank Cinema in Gilbreath Hall showed 'The Mastermind' on Friday and will screen 'In the Mood for Love' today at 5 p.m. with a short anniversary documentary, while upcoming events include Disney’s 'Olaf’s Frozen Adventure' on Nov. 17 during Holiday Lights Celebration and 'The Indelible Appalachians' with a panel discussion on Nov. 19 — all free to the public.  The East Tennessean

EDUCATION NEWS

  • College students can feel overwhelmed by heavy work and pressure during the semester. Experts advise taking breaks (for example, hiking or visiting local shops), managing time on assignments, and asking for help from professors and family to fight burnout.  The East Tennessean
  • This Wednesday, Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies will hold its 24th Notable Women Award Ceremony from 5 to 7 p.m. in the East Tennessee Room of the D.P. Culp Student Center to honor faculty including Christine Lewis and Cara Harker. The event will feature remarks from President Brian Noland and Dean Joe Bidwell + a reception for guests.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU's Robertson Center hosted the Speak Your Truth assertive communication workshop on November 17 from 3-4 p.m. (the event taught nonviolent conflict resolution and active listening) and it was organized with Counseling Services (students learned to set personal boundaries amid rising end-of-semester stress).  The East Tennessean
  • At its quarterly meeting last week, the ETSU Board of Trustees approved a 2.3 percent pay raise for full-time, benefits-eligible employees capped at $7,500 each retroactive to November 1. The board also approved a new Master of Science in Environment, Health and Disaster Studies program—combining geosciences, environmental health, epidemiology and disaster science to help address growing challenges.  WFHG

SPORTS NEWS

  • ETSU men's basketball defeated Northern Kentucky at Freedom Hall on Nov 12 with a final score of 75-63 as Cam Morris III, Brian Taylor II, and Blake Barkley led the win. The team will host Morehead State on Nov 21 and UL-Monroe on Nov 23—games that build on their recent momentum.  The East Tennessean
  • Tennessee’s statewide gun deer season will open Saturday and run until Jan. 4. Hunters may use guns, muzzleloaders or archery equipment and must follow limits set by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Association, which allows two antlered bucks with one per day and sets different antlerless deer limits by management area.  WCYB
  • ETSU’s men's tennis players Oscar Martinez and Martin Vergara finished as runners-up in the doubles bracket at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in San Diego. They will compete in the ITA Doubles Championship in Orlando in the coming weeks.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU women’s basketball fell to Kennesaw State at Brooks Gymnasium on November 12th by a score of 64 to 63—after a strong fourth quarter rally that helped close a 10-point gap. They will face Tennessee Tech in Cookeville on November 20th.  The East Tennessean
  • The YWCA Turkey Trot 5K will be held in Bristol on November 22, where runners and walkers start near the Bristol sign and finish at the YWCA to support its programs—another race, the Up & At ‘Em Turkey Trot in Johnson City, will kick off at 8:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning with over 4,000 participants expected. These events offer local residents a chance to run, walk, and contribute to community programs.  WFHG
