- ➤ At today's bricklaying contest, masons competed by laying bricks, with Fred Campbell winning after he laid 705 bricks in one hour while junior competitor Booker Steffey of Lebanon placed first by laying 247 bricks in 20 minutes—organizer Erik Davis said the event aimed to inspire young masons to learn the trade. - ➤ Owner Michael Trivette announced he is selling New Beginnings as he prepares to retire and said the new alcohol cut off ordinance has sharply reduced business, with last Saturday seeing only a third of the usual crowd. - ➤ ETSU will unveil a bronze memorial at Borchuck Plaza on Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. to honor the first five Black students who desegregated the campus in the late 1950s—an event that underscores the school's commitment to remembering its history. The East Tennessean
- ➤ ETSU received many complaints about two professors' social media posts on the killing of Charlie Kirk and placed both on leave; one professor has retired while the other will be fired for breaking university policy—saying celebrating murder is wrong and that the campus must be a safe place for learning. - ➤ ETSU will host its largest Family Weekend tailgate on Saturday from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.—tickets are capped at 1,000 and the event will move to the field next to the CPA to accommodate the crowd. - ➤ During Suicide Awareness Month, Nancy Hedberg shared her personal journey after her son, Pat, died by suicide and explained how she used therapy and faith to begin healing. - ➤ The College of Business and Technology is sponsoring ETSU’s official student section for football and men’s basketball this academic year—Dean Tony Pittarese said the move will boost the college’s visibility and support, with the next home football game scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 27.
