- ➤ A Bristol man, Nathan Hunter Whitaker, 27, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for selling fentanyl that caused a death in early February 2023 in Sullivan County—officers arrested him on April 1 in Johnson City when they found drugs, cash, and over 130 firearms. WCYB
- ➤ Four people were arrested in Johnson City after an undercover operation at Mi Mi's Foot Massage and Aroma Therapy Spa and face charges for impersonating a licensed professional and prostitution—three are charged with additional counts of massage or exposing an erogenous area while one is charged with promoting prostitution, with the investigation starting after a hotline call about possible trafficking. - ➤ ETSU’s Department of Psychology and Institute for Integrated Behavioral Health will receive $3.7 million from the Bureau of Health Workforce to expand training programs, with $1.3 million enhancing substance use treatment efforts and $2.4 million supporting graduate training in the Quillen College for Medicine — benefiting over 100 students in rural areas. - ➤ Johnson City leaders traveled to Nashville in July to ask the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation to designate Buffalo Mountain as a Tennessee Natural Area. City officials will meet with TDEC in Johnson City Friday to continue the process—if approved, the designation could bring a park ranger, more programs and amenities, and steps to preserve the land. - ➤ State grants over $2 million are funding a new walking and biking trail in Jonesborough and an upgrade at Willow Springs Park in Johnson City— the trail will connect downtown to the city line and eventually join the Tweetsie Trail while the playground will add a splash pad and inclusive features.
