CRIME NEWS

  • The Carter County Sheriff's Office is asking for help finding Sheila Ferguson, a 60-year-old woman who last contacted her family on May 19 and suffers from a medical condition that may affect her ability to return home safely on her own; she is 5-foot-6 and 145-pound and is believed to be traveling on foot.  WCYB
  • Authorities from the Tennessee Highway Patrol — Johnson City Police Department, Kingsport Police Department, and Washington County Sheriff’s Office — warn residents about a text scam that falsely claims an unpaid traffic ticket and urges payment through a link, so they should not respond if they receive such messages.  WFHG

  • Today, Auntie Ruth’s Doughnuts in Johnson City celebrated National Donut Day by giving away free donuts to customers—honoring women who served soldiers during World War One and joining a nationwide event by the Salvation Army.  WCYB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Johnson City Commission passed a resolution Thursday night that puts a one-year moratorium on new data centers and bitcoin mines in designated zoning areas and later limited these projects to the I-2 district—city leaders say the measure will allow time to study impacts and consider restrictions.  WFHG
  • Floodwaters from Helene damaged Unicoi County Hospital and led to the loss of three ambulances and four vehicles. Ballad Health and county leaders are replacing the damaged equipment, including four donated cardiac monitors, while emergency cases are sent to Johnson City Medical Center.  WCYB

  • Anticipated rains disrupted the Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway this weekend as organizers moved Friday’s qualifying runs so that Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle ran at 3 p.m. and Funny Car and Top Fuel ran at 4 p.m.—the event marked the 50th anniversary of the NHRA partnership that began with the Bristol Spring Nationals in 1965.  WFHG
