- ➤ Gary and Christie Foulks began their adoption process in April 2023 and flew to Kyrgyzstan on January 15 to bring their daughter Nora home amid visa delays that endangered her needed heart surgery. With help from Representative Diana Harshbarger and Senator Bill Hagerty, the family will return home Saturday so Nora can get urgent care. WCYB

- ➤ THP reported on April 1 that a 17-year-old riding a Suzuki motorcycle died in Erwin after evading police near North Elm Avenue—he passed multiple vehicles along a double-yellow center line—and struck a pickup truck turning onto 2nd Street at high speed; the driver of the Dodge was injured. WFHG

- ➤ Tyler Lee Owens' trial went on Tuesday at the Unicoi County courthouse where witnesses said he and his girlfriend, Stacie Brugger, argued over texts and an altercation in his camper led to her death, while audio recordings (from police interviews) showed he was scared to call police because he had active warrants and he pleaded not guilty to nine of the 14 charges (including first-degree murder). - ➤ A Comptroller's Office investigation found that Mountain View Elementary's Educare program in Johnson City allowed more than two dozen students to access services for nine months without recorded payments, leaving 41 weeks of financial records missing and an $18,000 shortfall. School leaders pledged to change procedures while evidence was turned over to the District Attorney's Office — prompting an ongoing review of the program. WFHG
