CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help finding 18-year-old Madelynn Blair, known as Maddy, who was last seen April 5 and is described as having brown hair, green eyes & a height of 5’3″ with a weight of about 125 pounds. WFHG
- ➤ At the Unicoi County Courthouse in Erwin, the murder trial for 29-year-old Tyler Owens, charged with shooting his girlfriend Stacie Brugger after a February 2022 argument, began as a jury was set and opening statements were given Monday – Owens pleaded guilty to five charges including possession of a firearm during a dangerous felony and evading arrest while pleading not guilty to nine charges including tampering with evidence and first-degree murder. - ➤ Johnson City Police warned residents to be on guard for phone and online scams that pressure victims into buying gift cards, sending cryptocurrency or sharing bank details — the department said they will never call or text to demand payment. WFHG
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Tweetsie Trail is a 10-mile gravel path that follows the old East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad route and is used by local hikers and bikers; established as a rails-to-trails project in 2014, the trail now preserves memories of a train that once carried materials and passengers between Johnson City and Elizabethton—details shared by the Library’s Local History and Genealogy Specialist. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Education leaders in Johnson City met with incoming superintendent Erin Slater from the Fort Madison Community School District on Monday to finalize her contract, which will take effect on July 1 until June 30, 2029—her annual salary is $189,800. WFHG

- ➤ Mayor Patty Woodby announced Tuesday that Cathy Umrichin is the new director of Carter County Emergency Management, bringing over 30 years of crisis response experience from work with the NYPD and Port Authority. Deputy director Luke Gragg (a veteran rescue lieutenant with multiple technical rescue certifications) was also named to help plan and coordinate emergency responses. WCYB
- ➤ Today, the House Government Operations Committee voted 8-7 in favor of HB 0793, a bill that would allow public schools to require proof of citizenship from K-12 students and to charge tuition or deny enrollment for those without proper status. The bill will move to the Finance, Ways, and Means Committee and then to the Senate calendar committee—if passed, it may face a challenge in Federal Court. WFHG
