CRIME NEWS

  • Johnson City police blocked the 600 block of E Fairview Avenue Tuesday night after residents said they heard sounds like gunshots and arguing—authorities report a suspect is in custody and a victim received non life threatening treatment at a hospital.  WFHG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Bristol Roots Project announced two funding opportunities totaling $52,000 to support folk and traditional artists in the Greater Bristol Region—applications are open until June 30 and will offer an individual $4,000 Tradition Bearer Fellowship for 8 artists along with a $5,000 Cultural Caretakers Grant for 4 organizations.  WCYB
  • Country music star Brad Paisley and rock star Bret Michaels will headline this year's Fun Fest in Kingsport. The festival will begin on July 24 (with Tauren Wells opening, Bret Michaels leading the Friday concert, and Brad Paisley headlining Saturday) before ending with the Eastman Fireworks Spectacular.  WCYB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tennessee High’s student-led newspaper The Maroon & White is celebrating 110 years of sharing stories at the school and within the Bristol community. Student leaders said the paper is adding an online edition and new features such as a 48 hours of Bristol report and a Senior issue.  WCYB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reviewing a CSX plan to restore the Nolichucky River banks (in Unicoi County) after the company was issued a violation for removing rock to repair rail lines damaged by Helene. Public comments are split (some residents worry more rock may be taken while others value the railroad for local recovery) as officials have not yet set a decision date.  WCYB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A public school immigration bill that would allow charging tuition for children illegally in the U.S. passed the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee Tuesday by a 7—4 vote and will now move to the Senate Calendar Committee for further review.  WFHG
