  • In honor of Women's History Month, several East Tennessee groups—Women’s Fund, Restoration House, YWCA, Girl Talk Inc. and FemCity—work to empower women and girls with grants, mentoring and education. They help low-income families, single mothers and teen girls through programs and projects like Girl Talk's $4.2 million house plan, showing their strong commitment to community support.  The East Tennessean

CRIME NEWS

  • Timothy Blair, 55, was charged with attempted murder after a shooting injured a Johnson City police officer on Wednesday night in the 400 block of South Barton Street — the prosecution seeks to revoke his bond ahead of a March 27 hearing.  WCYB

CULTURE NEWS

  • ETSU will host the Local Hearts Concert on March 27th at 5 p.m. in the first floor D.P. Culp Student Center Auditorium with six bands playing indie country music. Organized by Macy Strader, the event builds on last year’s concert which featured five bands — offering a fresh take with greater local talent exposure.  The East Tennessean
  • The Muslim Student Association will host its Eid Banquet on April 4 at 7 p.m. in the D.P. Culp Student Center Ballroom to celebrate the end of Ramadan. The event will feature traditional food and activities and is open to all with RSVP (by April 2).  The East Tennessean

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Johnson City Board of Education voted 6+1 on Thursday to offer Erin Slater the superintendent role. Board members will finalize her contract on April 7 so she can begin by July 1 + Slater is the current superintendent at Fort Madison Community School District in Iowa.  WFHG
  • ETSU’s Students of Finance Association placed second in the Financial Management Association’s annual Investment Analysis Competition—finishing as one of three finalists out of more than 35 teams nationwide—and presented their report at the Financial Leaders’ Conference.  The East Tennessean

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tennessee State Route 81 reopened Friday in Washington and Unicoi counties after a 1.1-mile section was rebuilt with guardrail installation, grade work and rock buttresses to remove an hour-long detour for over 5,400 vehicles daily—TDOT advised motorists to drive with caution as maintenance continues.  WCYB

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Feb. 27, ETSU’s Stoneage Weightlifting Club had a strong performance at the USA National University Championship when the men’s team earned second, the coed team took third and the women’s team finished fourth. Captain Caleb Weakland said several athletes—including first international student Violeta Martino from Paraguay—earned All-American Honor as the club now holds tryouts for international students and prepares for the 2025 Handle Barbell Invitational on April 12th at the ETSU Mini Dome.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU women’s basketball lost to Furman 64-58 in the Southern Conference quarterfinal at Harrah’s Cherokee Center on Thursday night — ending their postseason run — after a March 1 win had raised high hopes.  The East Tennessean
