CULTURE NEWS

  • Novelist Charles Baxter will visit the Reece Museum at 3 p.m. today to discuss his work and the new Wonderlands exhibit. The event, organized with the Bert C. Bach Written Word Initiative, includes a talk to his fiction writing class (and a discussion led by Tema Stauffer on the exhibit’s inspiration).  The East Tennessean
  • The ETSU Department of Art & Design presents Proof Of Lives: Evidence of Presence, Resistance and Endurance at Slocumb Galleries in Ernest C. Ball Hall through March 13. The exhibition features work by seven graduate students who use art to document lived experiences (a look at digital culture).  The East Tennessean

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students in the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program will present on active women’s organizations today from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Carrier Center lobby (2nd floor) at the D.P. Culp Student Center to mark International Women’s Day.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU Sherrod Library held a Rare Collections event on March 6 and 7 that showcased select rare books, maps, flags and digitized films to mark America's 250th anniversary. The library will host a 3D Model to 3D Print Workshop and a Coffee and Creative Writing meeting on Thursday, March 12.  The East Tennessean
  • Former ETSU president, Dr. Paul E. Stanton Jr. — a committed educator and doctor — died on Thursday, March 5 after a long career in service; a celebration of his life is scheduled for April 10 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church as colleagues reflect on his warm leadership.  The East Tennessean
  • John Green spoke as the keynote at ETSU's Festival of Ideas 2026 on Feb. 26 at Martin Center for the Arts. He shared his bestselling works and insights on digital media and education (including hints about a new book) with an engaged audience.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU's American Marketing Association chapter received an international honorable mention on Feb. 9 for its Major League Baseball case study and will attend the international conference in Chicago this week while consulting with local businesses on marketing strategies.  The East Tennessean

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local officials pressed Gov. Bill Lee to support a $66 million renovation to reopen the historic John Sevier building — a 1920s hotel turned low-income apartments — as part of a seven-year public-private project in Johnson City.  WCYB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Alex Hopke at ETSU is testing a new lab device that watches neutrophils swarm to fight fungal infections in patients with compromised immune systems, including those with poorly controlled diabetes. His research uses cytokine treatment to restore cell function + may lead to future therapies.  The East Tennessean

SPORTS NEWS

  • King University Athletics announced the death of Matilda Svensson, a junior on the Tornado women’s golf team from Oxie, Sweden who studied business management and marketing (she was on the Conference Carolina’s Players to Watch list for 2026) and her cause of death was not disclosed.  WFHG
  • ETSU Women’s Basketball competed in the SoCon Tournament in Asheville from March 5-6. They beat UNC Greensboro 62-50 then fell 48-57 to Samford, finishing an 18-13 season and tying for the regular season title.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU overcame a 17-point deficit to beat Western Carolina 69-67 in a SoCon semi-final Sunday in Asheville — advancing to a final that aired on ESPN Monday at 7 p.m.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU men’s golf finished tied for eighth at a 54-hole tournament in Bluffton after strong rounds by Gavin Tiernan (who secured a top-five finish and an eagle on hole 2). The Buccaneers now compete in the 41st Louisiana Classics today.  The East Tennessean
