  • Keep Johnson City Beautiful will host its fourth annual Beautification Day on Saturday, Mar. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Local groups (Volunteer ETSU, ETSU Department of Sustainability and Young Professionals) will gather to pick up litter and promote sustainability in Johnson City.  The East Tennessean

BUSINESS NEWS

  • After a brief closure due to building code concerns, Pennyman’s Diner announced Tuesday it will relocate to the old Amber’s restaurant in Hampton and plans to reopen soon (owners are working hard to prepare the site).  WFHG

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Reece Museum will host Community History Harvest: Girl Scouts in the Appalachians on Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; community members are invited to bring Girl Scout items like uniforms or badges to help document their history ahead of the upcoming 2027 Mountain Magic exhibition.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU Music Department will host acclaimed flutist Jae Hyun Moon in a guest recital on Sunday, Mar. 8 at 5:00 p.m. at the Powell Recital Hall at the Martin Center for the Arts + the free event offers community members a chance to experience high-level flute performance.  The East Tennessean
  • The ETSU Bluegrass Pride Band will perform at the 23rd Annual Bluegrass On The Beach Music Festival in Lake Havasu City (Friday, March 6, noon to 12:45 p.m., and Saturday, March 7, 2:30 to 3:15 p.m.), continuing its tradition of acclaimed music and strong student networking opportunities.  The East Tennessean

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ETSU will launch a new online housing assignment system next semester that lets students choose their rooms in real time + it separates first-year communities from returning students and reduces the fee for first-time applicants. Updates will be shared via emails and the housing website.  The East Tennessean
  • On Tuesday, Mar. 3, ETSU’s Graduate School held a budgeting and debt repayment workshop led by Associate Professor Anca Traian. The workshop covered topics like managing student loans, mortgages, and credit cards to help students plan for life after college.  The East Tennessean
  • High school students from eight schools competed in the Career Quest Culinary Challenge at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 4, cooking a soup, appetizer and entree in just over an hour. Virginia High won while Elizabethton and Dobyns-Bennett earned second and third places.  WCYB
  • ETSU’s Jazz Festival will be held at the Martin Center for the Arts on Saturday, March 7 from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., featuring Grammy-winning musicians Justin Stanton and Joseph Bullock from Snarky Puppy plus student workshops.  The East Tennessean

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Gerald Deehan at ETSU studies how teenage alcohol exposure + stress can alter the developing brain and lead to later alcohol use disorder. His lab examines these brain changes to inform future support measures in our community.  The East Tennessean

SPORTS NEWS

  • The ETSU men’s tennis team won 4-3 against No. 42 Charlotte on March 1 (their 9th consecutive win) as Oscar Martinez kept a 9-0 record in singles. They will face UNC Greensboro on March 11 at 2 p.m. at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU softball completed a season sweep of Alabama A&M on Saturday, Feb. 28 with a close afternoon game at Betty Basler Field and a pitcher's shutout in the night match — the team will travel to Rock Hill on March 6 for a doubleheader against Georgia State and Winthrop.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU will host the Tri-Cities Slam esports tournament March 6-8 at The Cave in the D.P. Culp Center, with free viewing starting Friday at 6 p.m. and competition in Rocket League and Super Smash Bros + $6,000 prize money to be distributed.  The East Tennessean
