  • Ballad Health gave $200,000 to Second Harvest Food Bank on Thursday plus launched a $100,000 matching challenge while Scott Niswonger added $100,000; the funds will help local families get nutritious food.  WCYB
  • Johnson City Parks and Recreation will hold community input sessions at Kiwanis Recreation Center (W. Market St) on Saturday, Mar. 7 from 10 a.m. to noon and Monday, Mar. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. to get resident feedback on its grant application for upgrading LED lighting at Arrowood-Mashburn Baseball Field.  WFHG

  • Pennyman's Diner in Johnson City announced that it is closing after the fire department ordered a shutdown due to the building's age and outdated system. The diner said it is unsure about moving to another location given high costs.  WCYB
  • Tri City Shuttle, a veteran-owned service in the Tri-Cities, focuses on DOT-certified, safe transportation after local hotels reported issues with inconsistent ride-sharing. The company said it will hire more drivers to better serve travelers from early flights to late nights.  WCYB
  • Build-A-Bowl food truck is serving custom comfort meals in fresh-baked bread bowls with options like chili, Cajun pasta, and turkey with gravy — the mobile service will join community events starting with a Family Fun Day at Avoca Christian Church on April 2 at 6:30 p.m.  WCYB

CULTURE NEWS

  • ETSU's annual 52 Film Festival (in its fifth year) begins today at the ETSU Martha Culp Auditorium where 11 teams will have 52 hours to write, shoot and edit a short film using three secret elements before screenings and awards follow once the challenge ends.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU Martin Center for the Arts presents TINA: The Tina Turner Musical at the Grand Hall Feb 28 – Mar 1, featuring the pop icon's hit songs and life story. Discounted student tickets for the Mar 1 show at 7 P.M. are available at the Carrier Center.  The East Tennessean
  • On Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m., ETSU hosted Duo Beaux Arts at the Martin Center as Dr. Catherine Lan and Tao Lin performed exclusively on Steinway pianos, offering a unique evening of world-class artistry for the community.   • ETSU faculty members Dr. Brynna Paros and Louisa Peng presented a collaborative flute + piano recital on Feb. 24 at Powell Recital Hall in memory of Sofia Gubaidulina, whose legacy lives on through each performance.  The East Tennessean

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Randy Wykoff — founding dean of ETSU College of Public Health — announced his retirement after nearly 20 years; his resignation takes effect at the end of the academic year and a national search for a successor is planned.  The East Tennessean

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Governor Bill Lee signed a law making it easier for transferred middle and high school athletes to compete immediately. The law pressures TSSAA to revise its transfer rules at its April meeting + public schools risk leaving the association if changes are not made.  WFHG

  • Health Wagon and ETSU Health have announced free health fairs offering screenings, wellness exams, diagnostic tests, and immunizations — the events will be held on Thursday, March 12 at Smiddy Clinic in Wise and Friday, March 13 at Sr. Bernie Kenny Clinic in Clintwood from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  WFHG
  • A local family is raising awareness after a quest of two years led to a diagnosis of Mitchell-Riley syndrome for toddler Tylor France. Tylor remains healthy and is monitored as she nears her second birthday in May while her family uses a Facebook page to support parents facing similar challenges.  WCYB

  • ETSU women’s tennis defeated Western Carolina on Tuesday, Feb. 24 with strong doubles play and straight-set singles wins that improved their conference standing. The Bucs will face UNC Greensboro on Saturday, Feb. 28.  The East Tennessean
