CULTURE NEWS

  • Last week, ETSU celebrated Banjo Romantika’s 10-year anniversary with a screening at Jackson Theater & a live panel that discussed Czech bluegrass music’s history and its connection to our local scene. The film features scenes from Czechia and local concerts that tie our heritage together.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU’s Slocumb Galleries hosts Visualize Your Future: An Appalachian Youth Art Showcase featuring art by K-12 students, expanded to include middle schoolers due to community demand; a free public reception will be held Friday, Feb. 13 (which includes a ceramic workshop led by Jeremy Myles).  The East Tennessean

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Ignacy Gaydamovich (an ETSU associate professor of cello) will perform a recital on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m. in Powell Hall at the Martin Center, featuring works by Bach and Kodály.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU is hosting 30-minute trivia sessions based on John Green’s essays this week to prepare for his visit on Feb. 26 at the Festival of Ideas. The graduate student association organizes events that include gift bags and a writing project to spark engaging conversation.  The East Tennessean
  • Final touches are underway at the new Washington County Public Library Gray Branch on Sid Martin Road. The 15,000 sqft facility (double the previous space) will host separate children and teen rooms and a larger training room and will open in the second week of March.  WFHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, the Johnson City Regional Planning Commission approved the preliminary plat for Heidi's House of Hope Phase 1, a mixed-housing project with 37 affordable units on Watauga Road. Future steps will review construction plans to expand the development to 184 units.  WFHG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Siva Digavalli at ETSU’s Gatton College of Pharmacy is using EEG-based biomarkers to improve drug development outcomes for neuropsychiatric disorders + recruiting a PhD student to join his research; his work on gamma oscillations may help boost objective measures of brain response in future treatments.  The East Tennessean
  • Patients at Valor Health in Johnson City are receiving ketamine-assisted treatment with guided therapy sessions (for severe depression, chronic pain and trauma) under medical supervision. Clinic director Nikki Roberts said the approach is designed to help those who have not found relief with traditional treatments.  WCYB
  • ETSU Counseling Center is expanding its mental health services today with new digital tools including the free Boost app (with a Zen room) and Togetherall (a monitored peer support network) and a crisis text line coming later to help students manage stress.  The East Tennessean

SPORTS NEWS

  • ETSU men's basketball won 87-70 over VMI on Saturday, Feb. 7 and secured first place in the Southern Conference with strong plays from key players (Barkley scored 22 points). The team will face Samford at Freedom Hall on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 12:00 p.m.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU women’s basketball won a close game against Furman on Saturday, Feb. 7 when Carmen Richardson's late 3-pointer secured a 58-55 win + the team will host the Chattanooga Mocs on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m. ahead of the SoCon Tournament.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU student organizations can win $1,000 for their chosen charity by attending home basketball games until Feb. 25 at Freedom Hall & Eastman Credit Union is partnering on the contest by awarding the prize to the organization with the most registered members via a QR code. Students and supporters should each submit one registration per game.  The East Tennessean
  • ETSU women's tennis team earned a 7-0 shutout win over Murray State on Feb. 6 at the ETSU Mini Dome, boosting their record to 3-2 + they will face Lipscomb University at 11 a.m. on Feb. 14.  The East Tennessean
