EDUCATION NEWS

  • Milligan University's WUMC is partnering with the BBC to launch the national program BBC Introducing in America tomorrow that will air monthly to spotlight emerging musical talent and support local artists like Annabelle's Curse. The station will be featured in January (a big honor for the school).  WCYB
  • Sullivan East senior Will Carrier earned recognition for his leadership in class & on the golf course. The class president and National Honor Society member finished 17th in state golf and will attend Milligan University to study nursing.  WCYB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • US Army Corporal George Hagie, 18, was finally identified through scientific testing after his remains were disinterred from the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific — he will be laid to rest locally in May.  WCYB
  • TVA has received a $400 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to speed up construction of the country’s first small modular reactor at its Clinch River site in East Tennessee & it is set to advance U.S. nuclear development as authorized by Congress in 2024.  WFHG

HEALTH NEWS

  • Bristol Regional Medical Center has started testing a new device (a tiny wire in a heart catheter) that finds a heart problem that can cause chest pains when blood flow is weak. Hospitals in Johnson City will have the tool by January 2026, officials said.  WCYB

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Publix supermarket is set to anchor a new 77-acre shopping center in Boones Creek if commissioners approve a development agreement Thursday, with Horne Properties planning to complete infrastructure by May 2027 and open the store by June 2027 at the northwest corner of Boones Creek and Christian Church roads.  WFHG
  • Local real estate analyst Don Finley reports that our region’s housing shortage is uneven—Sullivan and Washington Counties show a sharper deficit compared to Carter County and parts of Virginia. He estimates about 2,000 new homes are needed to balance the market.  WCYB
