  • Holston Habitat for Humanity was awarded a $1 million grant from the American Red Cross to continue repairs and launch a home replacement program for families still affected by Helene. The nonprofit has already fixed 16 homes in Washington, Carter and Unicoi counties — efforts that support rebuilds like Fender’s Farm.  WCYB

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Johnson City bar and restaurant owners report that the new 1 a.m. alcohol cut-off has lowered sales and forced staff cuts, with workers earning less and some having to seek a second job (reported owner Sam Pennington noted payroll drops while others lost regular patrons). City officials said the measure aims to curb late night violence and urged struggling businesses to contact the Bar Support program (phone 423 220-4501) for assistance.  WCYB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The EPA has asked a federal court to reverse its PFAS drinking water rules and delay full regulation to 2031—local environmental groups say tests in area rivers and drinking water show low levels of the chemical that may still harm health.  WCYB

  • Jane Roberts, 66, shared her battle with stage 3 breast cancer this October when she underwent months of chemo, surgery and radiation after a late diagnosis in 2020.
