CULTURE NEWS

  • State Rep Tim Hicks announced Monday that $50,000 in state funding was approved for the Johnson City Railroad Experience. The museum (207 North Boone Street) will use the funds to support its programs, historical collections, educational exhibits and immersive experiences from the balanced budget passed in April.  WFHG
  • The nature center at Steele Creek Park earned national accreditation after a year-long review of its operations, ethics and public service and is now part of the American Alliance of Museums— a distinction held by only 4% of museums in the country.  WFHG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local leaders and airport officials announced that Breeze Airways will start flights from Tri-Cities Airport in December, with one flight to Orlando International Airport on Dec. 12 and another to Washington Dulles International Airport on Dec. 15 — a $2 million investment by BRIDGE aimed at boosting regional growth may lead to additional airline services in the future.  WCYB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ETSU College of Nursing received a historic silver recognition from Better Workplaces Tennessee for its trauma-informed practices—making it the only school in the state to earn the award—and college dean Dr. Dena Evans said the honor helps create a safe work setting—giving faculty, staff, and students the support they need to provide compassionate care.  WCYB
  • ETSU and VHCC signed an agreement at a Monday meeting to help students make smoother transitions between the two schools. The deal lets students take courses in ten fields that will count toward degrees at both institutions — easing the path to a future in their chosen careers.  WFHG
  • Many Tennessee public school districts will resume classes next week as summer break ends. Johnson City Schools and several nearby districts will start on August 4 while Greeneville City and Greene County Schools open on August 1—Kingsport and Virginia schools will begin later with varied dismissal times.  WFHG

SPORTS NEWS

  • The professional fishing league Bassmasters will hold the Strike King Bassmaster College Classic Bracket event at Watauga Lake in Carter County from September 26 to 29, marking the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene. County officials campaigned to bring sports enthusiasts back to the more than 6,000-acre reservoir stocked with both large and smallmouth bass—ensuring the local area recovers after the storm.  WFHG
