CRIME NEWS

  • 37‑year‑old Dwayne Smith from Knoxville was arrested in Johnson City—after fleeing officers near Keystone Development on South Broadway Street, he was found hiding behind a home with a backpack on East Main Street—and now he faces charges for trespassing, evading arrest and drug offenses.  WFHG

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northeast State Community College announced a 19% increase in summer enrollment with over 1,900 students signing up due to returning students, new freshmen, and the Tennessee Promise Scholarship. The second summer semester will begin July 14—college officials expect further growth in student participation.  WFHG

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local health officials and lawmakers warned that the Senate draft proposal may cut Medicaid provider tax funds — which Ballad Health says could cost nearly $200 million in losses and force rural hospitals to close — while they push for changes that align with the House version freezing Medicaid rates. Regional senators and lawmakers are actively fighting the changes to protect hospital funding and access to care.  WCYB
