CRIME NEWS

  • Lisa Garland pleaded guilty last week to second-degree murder in Washington County—her actions in distributing crack cocaine laced with fentanyl led to Timothy Kuykendall’s overdose death in September 2022 and she will serve a minimum of 26 years in prison.  WFHG

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Aerospace Park at the Tri-Cities Airport was planned as a hot spot for the aviation industry to create jobs and boost the local economy—its development stalled and News 5’s Natalea Hillen provided additional details on Wednesday.  WCYB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • YA author Raquel Vasquez Gilliland will join the Library Teen Book Club — where she will discuss writing and her novel 'How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love with the Universe' on Saturday, July 12 at 2 p.m. at the Library’s Jones Meeting Center.  Johnson City Public Library
  • Sullivan East High School is undergoing renovations this summer that upgrade its science classrooms, athletic fields and gymnasium, and now work on the press box, culinary arts and cosmetology classrooms—all to be completed for the new school year. The school is also beginning a learning center for children ages 6 weeks to 4 years, but officials do not know when it will open.  WCYB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Roan Mountain Recreation Area in the Pisgah National Forest will reopen Friday, June 20 after extensive repairs from Hurricane Helene and will coincide with the annual rhododendron festivals in Bakersville and Roan Mountain. The U.S. Forest Service said crews will continue work on additional repairs Monday through Thursday until the end of July—visitors are advised to use caution near active debris removal sites.  WCYB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washington County commissioners approved the FY 2026 budget with the tax rate kept at $1.71 per $100 and allocated $4 million less for schools than requested, leaving a $6 million gap to cover state-mandated teacher salary increases. Some residents contested the high tax rate—over 1,450 signatures were collected in a petition calling for a rate of $1.41—while Mayor Joe Grandy said the county would work to maintain current programs.  WCYB
