- ➤ Today and Saturday the Blue Plum Festival returns in downtown Johnson City. The free, non-ticketed festival in its 26th year features live music headlined by Sam Burchfield on Friday and Colby Acuff on Saturday (festival hours are today from 4 to 10:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.), along with arts, crafts and food vendors. - ➤ The Johnson City Police Department will host the free Junior Police Academy for teens aged 14 to 18 from July 15 to July 17 at its Police Training Facility—participants will see patrol operations, K9 units, and forensic investigations to learn how real police work happens. WCYB
- ➤ High school students are spending their summer at ETSU as part of the Upward Bound program, where they receive college-prep support and three nutritious meals a day funded partly by the USDA Summer Food Service Program—this effort helps many first-generation college hopefuls build skills in areas such as podcasting and public speaking while preparing for future success. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ After over an hour of passionate community input, Johnson City commissioners approved zoning changes that now allow data centers including cryptocurrency mines and imposed a 12-month moratorium on new land use applications in the I-2 industrial district. The commissioners said they will use this time to research residents’ concerns and study how best to manage future data center operations—addressing noise and buffer issues. WCYB

- ➤ Johnson City Medical Center performed only emergency procedures on Thursday after a brief power outage — officials said that the cooling units are still under repair and the hospital accepted only trauma, stroke, and NICU transfers from other facilities.
