COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veteran Matt Moore of Hellbender Outfitters in Elizabethton will gift custom fishing rods to Gold Star families for children under 21 to honor fallen service members (in collaboration with the local VFW, American Legion and County Veterans Services).  WCYB
  • On Monday, Memorial Day services at Mountain Home National Cemetery honored veterans and Gold Star families with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, connecting the ceremony to America’s 250th anniversary and community remembrance.  WCYB
  • Hundreds of volunteers gathered Saturday morning at Mountain Home National Cemetery to place flags on more than 18,000 graves in the 75th annual ceremony honoring veterans (including groups like Sequoyah Council, Scouting America, Girl Scouts of the USA).  WFHG

CULTURE NEWS

  • Around 95 students from the Tennessee High School Band marched in the Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C. on Monday morning — their first national appearance as they performed 'Emblems of America' in the 17th set with an exclusive camera stop.  WCYB

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • TVA reported on Friday that local lakes remain below normal due to a long drought (South Holston and Boone are several feet low, and Watauga may drop further from water releases). Heavy rain is not expected to quickly fix the drought.  WFHG
