- ➤ Third grader Raylynn Byars at Ketron Elementary School was celebrated Friday for being named one of 10 Little Literacy Leaders by the Governor's Early Literacy Foundation (she received a $2,000 check toward a college scholarship and all rising first through third graders will later get a six-book pack). - ➤ A Washington County student addressed the school board Thursday night, calling members cowards for not acting on sexist remarks by board member Keith Ervin (censured on April 8 after viral video footage). WFHG
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Elizabethton police officer Hayden Holtsclaw was awarded the Medal of Distinguished Service after rescuing residents from a burning building during a March fire on West Elk Avenue. Chief Jason Shaw said his quick actions likely prevented a tragedy. WCYB
