Good morning, Johnson City. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 1st of May.

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 24, Jonesborough resident Amy Michelle Carder was arrested on Old State Route 34 when deputies discovered two handguns and concealed drugs in her vehicle — she now faces charges of unlawful weapon possession, multiple drug offenses, and contraband in a penal facility, is held on a $10,000 bond, and must appear in court on May 8.  WCYB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Telford Road bridge over Brown Branch closed indefinitely on Wednesday morning — the Washington County Highway Department noted that drivers used Matthews Mills Road to detour — and officials said the closure will remain until further notice.  WFHG
  • City officials learned during Tuesday’s City Council meeting that the Bristol State Liners will spend their second season at the TVA Credit Union Ballpark in Johnson City while awaiting a new home field in Bristol. Mike Mains—Director of Parks and Recreation—detailed a proposed partnership with Boyd Sports and Bristol Tennessee City Schools to renovate Tod Houston Memorial Field, and the council will vote on the plan next Tuesday.  WFHG
  • Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site announced Tuesday that it cut three AmeriCorps positions after federal funding was withdrawn, which means guided tours and daily activities will be reduced. • The U.S. Forest Service announced plans to increase timber production on federal lands by 25% and declared a wildfire risk emergency on 59% of its land, which covers parts of the Appalachian Mountains. Local residents worry the plan may change outdoor recreation & tourism, and a new group has formed to protect public lands.  WCYB
  • Johnson City is accepting volunteer applications for many city boards — BrightRidge, the visitors bureau, housing, the library, public art and the airport — with board terms of 2 to 4 years.
