- ➤ On Saturday, 135 volunteers from ETSU Leadership, Civics & Engagement and local partners cleaned up 1,521 lbs of trash during the 3rd Annual Beautification Day in Johnson City—recycling aluminum, glass, plastic, and paper. - ➤ Today TOSHA released a report concluding there was no evidence of wrongdoing by Impact Plastics officials during the fatal Helene flood on September 27, 2024, which killed six employees in Unicoi County and noted that employees exited at 10:51 a.m. — though some family members and a former employee claimed the notice came too late as litigation remains pending. - ➤ The Carter County Sheriff’s Office warned businesses in Roan Mountain, Hampton and North Carolina about a scam in which suspects buy small items and pay with counterfeit $50 or $100 bills—at least two suspects have used the same white early 2000s Volkswagen Toareg and changed clothes between transactions. - ➤ Lawmakers passed a bill on Monday that gives the Johnson City Commission the power to set alcohol sale hours in the downtown district after the Senate nearly unanimously approved it on March 27. City Manager Cathy Ball said the change is meant to improve safety and police resource use—while some business owners worry it could hurt the local economy—and the bill now awaits the governor’s signature. - ➤ Starting April 9, construction on West Oakland Avenue between West Mountainview Road and Marketplace Boulevard will close the road in Johnson City and is expected to continue for about one month until work is completed. Drivers should use Marketplace Boulevard and Hanover to West Mountainview Road—local traffic remains allowed on West Oakland Avenue at West Mountainview Road for nearby residences and visitors. WCYB
- ➤ TDOT announced that work on Elizabethton's historic Broad Street Bridge—damaged by Hurricane Helene last September—has been delayed from its planned end-of-May completion to early July.
