ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Sullivan East High School student died in a head-on crash on State Route 44 near Sand Bar Road—each car’s driver faces pending charges while another student was injured.  WCYB

CRIME NEWS

  • A Johnson City police officer who was shot on Wednesday was released from the hospital and will continue to recover at home — Timothy Blair has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after the shooting.  WCYB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Northeast State Community College received a $233,376 grant (from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development) to boost rural healthcare workforce development in upper East Tennessee. The grant will support healthcare training courses (such as for medical assistants and pharmacy technicians) and run from July 1 to June 20, 2026.  WFHG
  • Tennessee Online Public Schools will open enrollment on April 1 for its K-12 virtual program that has served 350 students statewide for 13 years in partnership with Greeneville City Schools and Bristol Tennessee City Schools. The program uses live classes for elementary students and asynchronous lessons for older ones — it even offers in-person social events such as trips to the Nashville Zoo — and students can enroll at no cost.  WCYB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Johnson City Fire Department will host a hands-on CPR training session in June at its training facility at 2832 W. Walnut Street. The free training will require registration and a signed waiver, and additional sessions may be scheduled based on demand.  WCYB
  • Tennessee State Route 81 reopened Friday in Washington and Unicoi counties after a 1.1-mile section was rebuilt due to damage from Hurricane Helene—this reopening removed a detour that added an extra hour for more than 5,400 daily vehicles, and TDOT reported that only six roads remain closed.  WFHG

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Tennessee Vols secured their seventh straight appearance in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament—earning a No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region and setting up a game against No. 15 seed Wofford. The First Round matchup will take place in Lexington, Kentucky on March 20th at 6:50 p.m. on TNT.  WFHG
