EDUCATION NEWS

  • Science Hill High School’s criminal justice program gives students hands-on practice through mock scenes and simulations (fingerprinting and writing letters to police departments) that build skills for future careers. The three-level program connects classroom learning with real-world experience.  WCYB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Monday, Washington County commissioners considered a zoning rule change to let meat processors sell products on-site; the move, requested by Appalachian Producers Cooperative, may help local farmers bypass long waiting lists and bring fresh, locally produced meat directly to customers.  WCYB

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ballad Health will build a new hospital behind Walmart off exit 34 in Unicoi this spring, following the destruction of Unicoi County Hospital by Helene. Local officials and state leaders say the project will restore essential care services for the community + boost regional resilience.  WCYB
  • Ballad Health has announced a new hospital in Unicoi County on a 14 acre property off Zane Whitson Drive behind Walmart in Unicoi. It will break ground this spring and is expected to be fully operational by 2028—restoring local healthcare services lost after the flood.  WCYB
