  • On Thursday, 30 local nonprofits gathered in Northeast Tennessee to launch a new disaster-response group (VOAD) aimed at boosting coordinated efforts after recent storms like Hurricane Helene. Leaders set the group’s structure and will finalize bylaws as they prepare for future emergencies.  WCYB

CULTURE NEWS

  • Songwriters from across the region will perform live music, storytelling and original tunes at the historic Jackson Theatre in Jonesborough on Friday, Feb. 6 from 7 to 9 p.m. as part of Tennessee Songwriters Week and to advance to a Nashville competition under Tennessee Tourist Development & event organizers.  WCYB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • ETSU earned the Carnegie Foundation’s Community Engagement Classification, a recognition held by fewer than 400 colleges nationwide, and said its students work with local partners on hands-on projects that connect classroom learning with community needs.  WFHG

  • ETSU Health is expanding primary care services by welcoming nearly 30 new physicians to lower wait times. Clinics in Bristol, Johnson City, Kingsport and Elizabethton now accept new patients for children, adults and families.  WCYB

SPORTS NEWS

  • A Visit Johnson City report shows that sports tourism brought nearly $2 million in spending and filled 3,000 room nights downtown in the second quarter, with the Bands of America Regional Championship boosting hotels and restaurants.
